Choosing my first post was difficult, but when I thought about it, I HAD to choose “Fork Deli”.
On a recent trip to London I made my self a promise, to try to eat in independent places only, no Chains. Now I didn’t succeed 100% (there were a few London only chains so I kinda felt that was still ok) but this little place certainly ticked the independent box.
I stayed Near Kings cross, so after traveling down and checking in I needed some lunch. So out pops my i-phone and loaded up Yelp! two seconds later I was leaving my hotel to take the short walk to my first discovery (Thanks yelp/Mrs C).
I found the place easily and upon entering the front door I knew I made the best choice. The first thing that caught my eye was the huge array of baked goods: cakes, pastries & breads (oh my).
After wiping the grin off my face it came to ordering time, they have a basic selection of 4/5 sandwiches, some tarts and a plethora of cakes.
I opted for a focaccia with mozzarella, pesto & sun-dried tomatoes while the other half chose a ham & cheese croissant. Both of these were served simply, toasted on a wooden board. I obviously had to have some tea and was delighted to see they not only had loose leaf tea, but had created their on blend, Winter tea, so on spying that my choice was easily made for me. Now I wouldn’t call myself a tea snob, but there is a certain way I like my tea served. if its loose leaf, I need to be able to remove the leaves before I drink it, I don’t think that’s too much to ask…..They did not disappoint, the tea was a delight to drink and by far the best tea I had while I was down.Needing a caffeine fix the other half opted for a latte, served quaintly in a little glass. when it came to cakes, we opted for a Portuguese custard tart and a chocolate brownie, both of which were an absolute delight. It was only when we were half way through our cakes, and neither of us had spoken, that we begrudgingly offered a taster but it was obvious I picked best with the custard tart, though “someone” might argue that and say the brownie was better, but what do they know??
When it came to paying the bill I HAD to ask if they sold their tea for me to take home, good news was YES they did, then the bad news came when they had none of the winter tea to give out. BUT they instantly became my hero when they offered to make a box and use the tea that was on the shelf, I was a VERY happy Barry.
The staff were excellent from beginning to end, it was lovely to go somewhere and just feel so welcomed and at home.
So if you’re in London and find yourself at Kings cross, which any Harry Potter fan worth their salt should, PLEASE go and visit Fork Deli, you won’t be disappointed
